What Is Driver CPC?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a legal requirement for anyone who drives a lorry, bus, or coach professionally in the UK. It was introduced in 2009 under EU Directive 2003/59/EC and continued post-Brexit. Without a valid Driver CPC, you cannot legally drive for hire or reward — even if you have the correct driving licence.
Who Needs a Driver CPC?
Anyone driving a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes for commercial purposes. This includes: HGV Class 1 and Class 2 drivers, bus and coach drivers, van drivers using vehicles over 3.5t. Exemptions include: driving for personal use, military vehicles, emergency services, and vehicles used for non-commercial purposes.
How to Get and Maintain CPC
Initial qualification: Achieved through your HGV driving test process. Periodic training: 35 hours of approved training every 5 years (usually 5 x 7-hour courses). Cost: £50-£100 per 7-hour module (£250-£500 total over 5 years). Many employers pay for CPC training — ask before paying yourself. Training covers: safe driving, regulations, health and safety, customer service.
CPC Card
Your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) — the plastic card that proves your CPC — must be carried while driving professionally. If stopped without it, you could face a fine of up to £1,000. Replacement cards cost £25 from DVSA.
