Why Get a Forklift Licence?
A forklift licence (also called an FLT licence) is one of the best investments you can make for warehouse and logistics work. Forklift operators typically earn £1.50-£3/hr more than general warehouse operatives. There's strong demand across the UK — every warehouse, distribution centre, and manufacturing facility needs FLT operators. The training is short (3-5 days) and relatively affordable.
Types of Forklift Licences
Counterbalance (the most common): Standard sit-on forklift used in warehouses and yards. Reach Truck: Narrow aisle forklift for high racking work. Powered Pallet Truck (PPT): Ride-on or walk-behind pallet movers. LLOP (Low Level Order Picker): For picking from low-level racking. VNA (Very Narrow Aisle): Specialist trucks for very tight warehouse spaces. Telehandler: Used primarily in construction and agriculture. Most warehouse jobs require either Counterbalance or Reach Truck certification.
Training and Costs
Novice course (no experience): 3-5 days, £400-£700. Experienced operator (refresher): 1-2 days, £200-£350. Conversion (adding a new truck type): 2-3 days, £300-£500. Courses are run by RTITB or ITSSAR accredited training centres. You'll learn: pre-use safety checks, basic manoeuvres, stacking and de-stacking, loading/unloading vehicles, and emergency procedures. At the end, you'll take a practical assessment.
Where to Train
RTITB accredited centres can be found across the UK. Many large employers (Amazon, DHL, Wincanton) offer free forklift training to their permanent staff. Some recruitment agencies also offer subsidised training. Search for 'forklift training near me' or check the RTITB website for approved centres.
