What Is a Right to Work Check?

Every UK employer is legally required to verify that you have the right to work in the UK before your first day. This applies to all workers โ€” British citizens, EU nationals, and non-EU nationals alike. The check involves providing original documents (or a digital share code) that prove your immigration status and right to work.

Documents That Prove Right to Work

British/Irish citizens: UK or Irish passport (current or expired). EU Settlement Scheme: Digital share code from gov.uk/prove-right-to-work. Visa holders: Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) + share code. Indefinite Leave to Remain: BRP or passport endorsement. Student visa: BRP + share code (with working hour restrictions). Other: Certificate of registration/naturalisation + supporting docs.

How to Get a Share Code

1. Go to gov.uk/prove-right-to-work. 2. Sign in with your identity document. 3. Select 'Get a share code'. 4. Enter your date of birth. 5. You'll receive a 9-character share code valid for 90 days. Give this code plus your date of birth to your employer. They can verify your status instantly online.

What If My Documents Are Being Renewed?

If your passport or BRP is being renewed, you may be able to use the Employer Checking Service. Your employer can request a Positive Verification Notice from the Home Office while your documents are being processed. Contact your agency or platform to discuss options โ€” they can guide you through the process.
